माऊस हा इंग्रजी शब्द आहे. माऊस म्हणजे मराठीत उंदीर. आपण गणपतीला विद्येची देवता मानतो. उंदीर हे गणपतीचे वाहन आहे. आधुनिक काळात संगणक हा ज्ञान मिळवण्यासाठी मोठा उपयोगी ठरला आहे. माऊस हा त्याचाच एक भाग आहे. माऊसच्या शोधामुळे संगणक वापरणे खूप सोपे झाले आहे. माऊसचा शोध ‘डग्लस एन्गलबर्ट’ यांनी सन १९६४ मध्ये लावला. त्यांनी तयार केलेला माऊस लाकडी आवरण व धातूची दोन चाके असलेला होता. त्याचा आकार उंदराप्रमाणे असल्यामुळे त्याला ‘माऊस’ असे म्हटले जाऊ लागले. या अभूतपूर्व शोधाबद्दल त्यांना पाच लक्ष डॉलर्सचा पुरस्कार देण्यात आला. सध्याच्या काळात अतिशय आधुनिक रुपात माऊस तयार झालेला आहे.
