०१. जंगलचा राजा-सिंह
सिंहाला जंगलचा राजा म्हटले जाते. सिंह हा कळपाने राहणारा प्राणी आहे. सिंहाला इंग्रजीत ‘लॉयन’ व त्याच्या कळपाला ‘प्राईड’ म्हणतात. सिंहाच्या कळपात ३ ते ४ पर्यंत सिंह असू शकतात. शिकार केल्या नंतर कळपाचा म्होरक्या प्रथम शिकारीवर ताव मारतो व इतर नंतर. सिंहाची लांबी अडीच मीटर पर्यंत व वजन अडीचशे किलोग्रॅमपर्यंत असते. सिंहाच्या पिलाना छावा म्हणतात. जंगलात संध्याकाळच्या शांत वेळी सिंहाची गर्जना सुमारे आठ किलोमीटर दूर पर्यंत ऐकू जाते.सिंह झाडावर चढू शकतो. सिंह भूक लागेल तेंव्हाच शिकार करतात. इतर वेळी दिवसातील सुमारे वीस तास आराम करतात. सिंहाची दृष्टी माणसाच्या पाचपट तीक्ष्ण असते.सिंहाचे आयुष्य साधारणपणे बारा वर्षे असते. वन्य प्राणी सुरक्षित राहण्यासाठी शासनाने अभयारण्ये तयार केली आहेत.
